Before Kajaani Castle was built, the river valley was in a natural state. As the castle took shape, a small village community of grey, modest log cabins sprung up around it. Per Brahe the Younger declared Kajaani a city as early as 1651, even though there were only a few hundred houses.

Nowadays, the castle ruins lie in the heart of the bustling city of Kajaani. Kajaani river valley has been declared an important national cultural environment that includes the power plants constructed on the Ämmäkoski and Koivukoski waterways in 1917 and 1947 respectively, Tervakanava canal, Lussitupa cottage and the statue of the Olympic champion Heikki Savolainen. A walking path named after the photographer Herman Renfors goes along the riverside.

There is a car park for visitors to the Kajaani castle ruins next to Kainuun Pirtti handicrafts and gift shop.
